Our research group works together with provincial fisheries administrations in the development of techniques and procedures to strengthen the management of freshwater resources of Patagonia.
In recent years, several articles in high impact scientific journals have exhibited some major fishery collapses, questioning the ability of mankind to manage commercial fishery resources. Recreational fisheries have been at the side of the ensuing debate, perhaps because traditionally they have been regarded as self-regulated systems, where the interest of fishermen, and hence fishing effort, would promptly decline in response to the loss of fishing quality. |

Some new looks at traditional sport fisheries with clear signs of over-exploitation have provided a less optimistic picture. The situation in Patagonia does not seem to be more encouraging; reports abound of declining quality of fishing, particularly through reductions in the size of fish caught. Our research group works together with provincial fisheries administrations in the development of techniques and procedures to strengthen the management of freshwater recreational fisheries of Patagonia. |
Our work is based on some general principles:
Take into consideration the need to develop methods and protocol that are both efficient and economic, which realistically could be assimilated by provincial administrations.
Secure the transfer of generated technical capacity and the assimilation by provincial administrations.
Evaluate biological systems integrally, including the health of native species and habitat.
Consider the regional diversity in biological and social characteristics associated to different river basins and locations.
Promote co-management systems, accommodating pluralistic views, instilling shared responsibilities, and ensuring compromise by different actors in resource management.
Goals
Develop permanent fisheries information systems and assist managers in their implementation
Help provincial administrations to boost their technical capacity to back resource management.
Generate tools and processes to develop co-management systems for the administration of recreational fisheries.
Some specific activities
Evaluation of alternative monitoring stock assessment techniques and data gathering protocols for recreational fish populations and fisheries.

Design and construction of fisheries information systems.
Development of mathematical simulation models to be used as evaluation tools of management strategies and as communication tools between technicians, administrators, and the public.
Support the development of consulting and administration systems for recreational fisheries.
